Book Review: Lives and love torn apart due to war, how far should loyalty go when the heart is at stake?

Captured by Love

By Jody Hedlund

Author Jody Hedlund has once again, written a beautifully captivating tale. The characters have been brought into reality so clearly the reader will instantly feel as if they are best friends. Willing to follow them into turmoil, heart break, and life endangering situations the reader will not want to put the book down until they know what happens to Angelique, Pierre and Jean.

Not really a love-triangle, but close enough to see where 18-year-old Angelique would be torn between her heart for one brother and her loyalty to a commitment given to the other brother. The reader will follow the ups and downs of her decisions and regrets while she struggles to stay alive.

The setting is exquisite on the Michilimackinac Island in the Michigan Territory of 1814. The British have invaded an American occupied fort forcing Americans that won’t sign an Oath to the King to vacate the island.

The story is rich in history and quite easily transports the reader back in time to vicariously live as the islanders and occupiers did. It highlights the turn of seasons as they struggle to survive during a harsh winter as oppressed people of the invaders. They eagerly wait when supplies and traders can return to the island after the spring thaw.

This story encompasses so much that every reader will find something to their liking; with romance, forgiveness, and espionage, battles of war, adventure and calls to action. The character growth that is all important is expertly weaved into the tale that at the end the required change sneaks up as the reader cheers on the main characters. It is definitely a “will they end up together as all hope is lost” kind of ending.

Definitely don’t miss this novel if you like tales of love and historical adventure. The Christian aspects were not preachy, but were weaved into how the characters of the time period would normally act; making this novel easily read by non-Christians and Christians alike.
